What Qualifies as an Eye Emergency?

Some eye problems require immediate attention to prevent further complications. If you’re experiencing any of the following, contact us right away:

  • Eye injuries or trauma (impact, cuts, or swelling)
  • Sudden vision changes (blurred vision, flashes of light, or new floaters)
  • Foreign objects in the eye (dust, metal, glass, or debris)
  • Chemical exposure (cleaning products, household chemicals, or workplace accidents)
  • Eye infections (redness, swelling, discharge, or pain)
  • Severe eye pain or pressure

Even if your symptoms seem mild, having an eye doctor evaluate the problems is best—early treatment can prevent lasting damage.

What to Do in an Eye Emergency

Foreign Object in the Eye

  • Do NOT rub your eye—this can cause more damage.
  • Try to rinse your eye with clean water or saline solution.
  • Seek professional care immediately if the object is embedded or won’t come out.

Chemical Exposure or Burns

  • Flush your eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Avoid rubbing or applying anything other than water.
  • For urgent care, go directly to the emergency room. You can contact us for help with what to do next.

Sudden Vision Loss or Blurriness

If you experience sudden, unexplained vision changes, contact us immediately. This could be a sign of a retinal detachment, eye stroke, or other urgent condition.

Eye Infections or Severe Redness

Symptoms like pain, swelling, discharge, or extreme sensitivity to light may indicate an infection. Call us for an exam before using any over-the-counter drops that could make it worse.

Eye Trauma (Injury or Impact)

  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling—do not apply pressure.
  • If bleeding, keep the eye closed and seek professional care as soon as possible.
